ASHANTI GOLD WEIGHT

Woman and Man Playing Macala

On the southern coast of West Africa, in the territory formerly referred to as ‘Gold Coast’, gold dust was once the typical form of currency. In order to weigh gold dust, weight systems with their own specific weights were developed, the so-called ‘gold weights’, using the lost wax casting method from yellow cast-alloy (brass). This ‘figural’ gold weight belongs to the Akan tribe in the modern day state of Ghana.
